Aww, this sounds like a very charming book indeed, as the first thing that caught me was Mrs. Harkness' love for her husband and her desire to continue his legacy. Perogyo is right though in pointing out that other issues would also need to be explored as kids read this book. :)

I really enjoyed this book, however, as you said, it's important to share the information about 1930s sensibilities regarding animals. In essence, the story is more about the amazing Mrs. Harkness than the panda.

I was a first grader in the DC area when pandas were first brought to the national zoo. Because of my name (Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing were the panda's names), I was "in charge" of keeping the class current on panda news. I will have to take a look at this!

My neighbor uses "burro security" on her farm... they are fierce defendants against coyotes. I like Cat's book because she shows how both guardians grew up with her flocks. And the photos are awesome.
