pangolin who has some fears about the outside world. He would rather stick with his mother and with the things that he already knows. "Roly Poly, very small, doesn't like new things at all." It's not until he stubs his toe and goes rolling away that he discovers that new things, when shared with others, are not so bad after all.
Roly Poly Pangolin by Anna Dewdney (Llama Llama series) is a rhyming tale about stretching your boundaries and having the courage to make new discoveries . Preschool and primary students will enjoy learning about a fairly unknown animal and kudos to Dewdney for her author's note that is designed to raise awareness about the endangered pangolin. This would be a great book to use at the start of the year as you are building a classroom community and students are dealing with fears of the unknown. Young students will easily make connections with Roly Poly's feelings of wanting to stay close to his mother and other familiar surroundings.
